The Ford Escort premiered for the 1981 model year as both a two-door hatchback and four-door station wagon (the wagon appeared a year later). For the first generation, the Escort was equipped with a 1.6L inline four-cylinder engine capable of around 68 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission or an optional three-speed automatic. In 1983, the Escort parts were given a slight redesign, which included a new 2.0L diesel inline four-cylinder engine and a peppier 1.6L turbocharged inline four-cylinder that produced 120 horsepower. 1985 ushered in another set of updates. Bigger rear windows and less chrome were the most noticeable differences in accessories. The second generation of the Escort rolled off the line for 1991. It was moved to the Mazda B platform along with the Mazda 323 and Protege. A 1.9L engine featuring an Electronic Distributorless Ignition System (EDIS) was standard and married to a four-speed automatic transmission. Ford began the second running of the Escort by offering only a hatchback body-style, which caused sales to slow. But in 1992, the sedan Escort became available, subsequently helping raise the model's popularity.
